  • Internationalisation prevents drop-out

    At Nord-Gudbrandsdal upper secondary school internationalisation is actively used as a tool to improve the quality and increase the attractiveness of vocational education. Including exchange opportunities in the programmes has positive effects on the students’ motivation and work efforts.

  • "This is my story" - Youth in Action project

    Youth from Latvia, Denmark, Germany and Bosnia recently met in Lillehammer to prepare the project activities that will take place in April. The project will focus on young people living in a multicultural society.

    Representatives from Thuringia in Germany visited Oppland on August 11 to discuss the possibilities of a future cooperation agreement.

  • Youth climate camp 2010

    Young people from four nations were gathered in Jotunheimen from 12 to 15 August to discuss the world’s climate challenges. The camp was organized by Young Friends of the Earth and the Youth County Council in Oppland, in cooperation with the Norwegian Mountain Museum and the project Climate Park 2469.

  • Visit from Otjozondjupa

    A delegation from Otjozondjupa region in Namibia recently visited Oppland, and the two regions continued the discussions about cooperation areas that were initiated last year. At the end of the visit a cooperation agreement was signed. The two regions will exchange experiences within various fields: Education and culture, regional planning, agriculture, public health and planning.

  • European Mountain Convention in Lillehammer

    Euromontana, the European association for mountain areas, together with the Norwegian Mountain Regions Cooperation, is organising the biggest event for stakeholders from mountain areas in 2010. The conference will take place in Lillehammer (Oppland, Norway) from 15 to 17 September.

  • Climate change on the agenda in Szczecin

    10 representatives from Oppland Youth Council and Young Friends of the Earth Oppland have recently visited Szczecin in Poland and had discussions with Polish youth about climate changes and what young people can do to influence the decision makers. The meeting was one of the activities in the project “climate changes and youth – competence, networking and involvement”. The project is financed through the EU programme Youth in Action.

    Member of Oppland County Council and the international committee, Sanna Sarromaa, participated at the launch of the Social Inclusion Regional Group (SIRG) in Brussel with the presentation ”Oppland County’s challenges with gender equality”.

  • International students with scholarships from Oppland County Authority

    17 students from Lillehammer and Gjøvik University Colleges’ international partner institutions have received scholarships from Oppland County Authority to study in Oppland in 2009-2010.

  • Seminar in Brussels on gender equality and social inclusion

    The seminar in Brussels on 10 March is organised by the Oslo Region Europan Office and its partners in the Social Inclusion Regional Group (SIRG). SIRG will organise a series of seminars related to the the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. This seminar will focus on the inclusion of women in the labour market and the regional perspective on gender equality.

  • Contribution to the Green Paper on Learning Mobility

    Oppland county authority submitted in December its contribution to the European Commission's green paper on learning mobility. The green paper raises a wide number of issues linked to the opportunities for young Europeans to go abroad for learning, studying, volunteering or work experiences.

  • Visit from Oppland to Otjozondjupa

    A delegation from Oppland county, headed by County Mayor Audun Tron, visited Otjozondjupa region in Namibia last week. The purpose of the visit was to discuss possible areas of cooperation between the two regions.

  • European network on second homes development

    Oppland County Authority has taken the initiative to establish an international network on the topic of second homes. As a result of a partner search by AER (Assembly of European Regions) the network now has 9 members, from 7 countries; Finland, Sweden, Austria, France, England, Spain and Norway.

  • Regional answers to climate change

    The AER conference "Regional answers to climate change" in Limoges, France, gathered more than 300 participants from European regions. Oppland County Council was represented by Sanna Sarromaa and Olaf Nils Diserud. In the conference declaration climate change is recognised as one of the most significant social, economic and environmental threats regions face worldwide. In the fight against climate change, action must be taken not only at international and state levels, but more so at local and regional levels.

    Oppland County Authority has joined the network RUR@CT - European regions for rural innovation. The partners in the network exchange experiences and best practice within many areas of regional development.

  • Contribution to the Green Paper on Territorial Cohesion

    Oppland County Authority has submitted comments on the content of the Green Paper on Territorial Cohesion, which was launched by the European Commission in October 2008. The Green Paper argues that territorial diversity is a vital asset that can contribute to the sustainable development of Europe as a whole. Oppland County Authority emphasizes the importance of a differentiated approach - regions are different and need to get access to different means to make full use of their potential.

  • New Chairmanship in BSSSC

    For the last two years the Eastern Norwegian County Network has had the Chairmanship and secretariat for the organisation BSSSC (Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation). At the beginning of 2009 the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg takes over the chairmanship. Upcoming chairman is State Secretary Carsten Lüdemann, Comissioner for Federal, European and International Affairs of Hamburg.

  • European Mountain Convention 2010 in Lillehammer

    Euromontana's VII Mountain Convention will take place in Lillehammer in 2010. The conference will be organised in cooperation with Fjellregionsamarbeidet, a network of mountain regions in Southern Norway.

  • International strategy approved by the County Council

    The County Council has approved the proposed strategic plan for the County Authority's international work. The debate preceding the decision expressed a broad political consensus about the importance of internationalisation.

  • Second homes as a means for regional development

    Oppland County Authority has launched the idea of an international project on second homes development. The idea will be presented to the AER working group on sustainable rural development during the conference in Linz 27-28 October.

  • International strategy

    The county authority's international committee has developed a new strategy for internationalisation. The 26 municipalities and various institutions in the county have been invited to comment on the proposed strategy. The deadline for submitting statements is 1 October.

  • Delegation from Valmiera to Oppland

    At the end of July Oppland county authority received a delegation from Valmiera county in Latvia . The main purpose of the visit was to attend the folk music festival “Jørn Hilme-stemnet” in Valdres, but the delegates also had meetings with politicians and administration in Oppland county authority. Valmiera and Oppland have cooperated in a number of areas since the cooperation agreement was signed in 2001. Culture has been one of the most important fields, in particular exchange of young musicians.

  • European project on Mountain Transhumance

    Oppland county authority has taken the role as lead partner in a European cooperation on pastoralism in mountain areas. Mountain regions in Italy , France , Romania and Norway are partners in the project, as well as the organisation Euromontana. The consortium has submitted a project application to Interreg IVC, and the overall objective of the project is to encourage, maintain and promote the transhumance and mountain pastoralism system and practice with all its added values. The partners have great expectations that the project will result in helping them develop adapted policies to sustain a traditional activity essential to maintain the landscape, that is in itself a cultural heritage, and that benefits not only its direct stakeholder but also the environment and indirect stakeholdes (e.g. within tourism).

  • Successful AER conference in Lillehammer

    At the end of February Oppland county authority hosted the AER conference “Future of rural development policy and rural regions”. More than 120 delegates from European regions attended the conference. In addition to sessions and workshops the participants also got a presentation of Oppland county authority and its organisation. “Second homes” was one of the central topics at the conference, and 80 delegates took part in a guided tour in Hafjell where they could learn more about Oppland’s policy on this issue.

  • Information in several languages concerning upper secondary education and training

    The Norwegian Directorate of Primary and Secodary Education funded last year brocures about upper secondary education for minority-language applicants and their parents and guardians. The brochures are written for pupils and parents/guardians who have recently arrived in Norway. The brochure has been translated into 13 languages. New editions will be published in 15 languages by the end of December 2006. Here you'll find information in 13 different languages.
