10 representatives from Oppland Youth Council and Young Friends of the Earth Oppland have recently visited Szczecin in Poland and had discussions with Polish youth about climate changes and what young people can do to influence the decision makers. The meeting was one of the activities in the project “climate changes and youth – competence, networking and involvement”. The project is financed through the EU programme Youth in Action.
During the meeting in Poland the youth followed up on the topics that were discussed at the climate camp in Jotunheimen, Norway, in August 2009. The camp was the first activity in the project. The aim of the Youth in Action project is to build competence on climate issues and give the youth more knowledge on how to influence political processes.
A further aspect is that the young people will act as a reference group for the climate park project, Klimapark 2469. This project, initiated by Oppland County Authority, aims at establishing a climate park in Jotunheimen where you can physically see and perceive climate changes and the relation between nature and culture in a long term perspective. The most important target group for the climate park project is children and youth. The climate park will contribute to creating a new understanding of climate and environmental changes.
The youth involved in the Youth in Action project will collect good international examples of how children and young people can be involved in different climate projects, get an overview of exisiting international youth networks on climate issues and provide suggestions for methodology and content of the climate park concept.
